Evaluation - Question 1

I what ways does your media products use, develop or challenge froms and conventions of real media products?
Before creating my own documentary I firstly watched a number of documentaries to establish the codes and conventions of filming and editing real media interviews. Before the production work began as a class watched 'In the teeth of Jaws - Part 1' and 'The Simpsons 20th anniversary special', from watching these we noticed a number of codes and conventions. When filming the interview the interviewee was always in medium shot:

Interviewee: In the teeth of Jaws - Part 1
This man is framed in a medium shot, also
behind the man there is the sea which relates
to the topic of Jaws and its a Shark.

Interviewee: Christine jones a trichologist
which we interviewed for our documentary,
we framed her in a medium shot to the left of
the screen, this is like the 'Jaws' interviewee.

Interviewees always look at the interviewer not directly at the camera and the framing follows the rule of thirds- eyeline is roughly a third of the way down. Also another example from the clip above is the editing it is vital for the interviewee to answer all questions in full for the viewer to understand. Also this is to avoid jumps between the interviews and the questions cutaways are used they also support what the interviewee is saying. Also when this is done there tends to be a thought about mise en scene to help the audience visually understand what the interview was talking about or what their job was.

Interviewee: From Michael Shumacher Part 1
The mise en scen behind this man is a pitstop
were drivers stop in races. The background
relates to the documentary.

Interviewee: Craig, a hairdresser who we
interviewed in our documentary, he is a
hairdresser so the mise en scene has got hair
products in. We stages this mise en scen to it
related to the documentary.
They are also placed either in the left or the right of the shot and they are looking to the opposite corner of the camera to were they are sitting. Also when the interviews do this they alternate from left to right to create variety.

Also from watching a number of different types of documentary I recognised that they had all been brought together with a voiceover. I noticed this was to introduce the programme and help link all the interviews together. The voice over in all the documentaries I watched was important to help the viewer inderstand the direction of the programme. Also before we could begin with the print add as a class we looked at the codes and conventions of print adds, and we looked a number of ads for different channels. We found that all of the print adds that we looked at have a strong central image with the information of when and were, the channel and the name of the documentary.

There is a strong eye catching image which
makes the audience question what the
programme will be about. It shows the channel,
the title. date and a slogan.

We also follwed this and used a strong central
image, there is also a question of what the
programme will be about.

Also before we began to create the radio ad we have to develop an understading of the codes and conventions of radio ads. When we listened to exsisting radio ads we noticed that most of the ad is voice clips which were from the documentary itself. Therefore we couldnt create the radio ad before the documentary was complete. We also noticed that there was a different voice at the end of the documentary to tell the audience when the documentary will be on, what channel and also the title of the documentary.

The trailer begins with different clips from the
documentary. Then ending with a different voice
over to tell us when and where the documentary
will be.
When looking at exsisting documtaries i didnt believe that we could achieve something which looking anything like them, but by simply folloowing what these exsisting products do it was easy to recreate. I think all the framing of our interviews are as good as existing therefore i am confident that we have followed the codes and conventions closely

Evaluation - Question 2

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
When planning who and what will be featured in the print and radio adds and the documentary, we had to make sure that all the texts connect together. In both the print add and the radio add there is the same slogan which is one of the main aspects of the adds, it doesnt have to be catchy the slogan we chose is 'Whats your style' this links with the documentary because it is called hair, you either have it or you dont.

Also we chose the girl who is the main image of the print add because she was also featured in the opening titles to connect these elements. In opening titles we tryed to pick lots of different girls with different hair colours to make the opening titles more varied this also connect with the slogan 'Whats your style'. The girl featured on the print add has bright hair colour and we chose this girl to be in the print add because her hair stands out and is more unique.

The radio add is also linked to the documentary because the voiceover on the documentary is also the voice at the end of the radio add. This voice over at the end of the radio add is essential to let the audience know when and were the documentary will be showing. The voiceover on the documentary is also vital to help the bring all the interviews together. When we chosing the person to do the voiceover we looked at our target audience research and the audience said they would like to see a female voiceover.

There is also clips of the documentary in the radio add to give the audience a hint of what is to be expected in when they see the documentary.

we will be able to advertise our radio advert on any radio station that could be targeted at the same audience however it can not be advertised on any of the bbc radio stations because the bbc is funded by the public and a non comertial radio station. we are slao limited to the genra of radio staion, for example a sports radio station would not be a suitable atation to braodcast our advert. our radio advert will be braodcasted on weekdays and weekends prefrubly between 12- 4 pm this is because people may find it unsuitable for a documentarie to be braodcasted at a time where people are preparing food.

The newspapers where my print ad would be found is a mixture between The Mail and The Express The Times and The Guardian because of the different varities of interviews found in our doucementary. It has the serious side with a Trichologist and a hair loss sufferer but also a fun side with the different types of hair dressers. These newspapers are also good for our target audience of women and men between 14-45.

I believe that the constrast of all the products as a whole go really well toegther because they are all linked together so that they all make sense when they are seen together. The voiceovers are the main thing i think that links the documentary and the radio trailer because the voiceover ties everything together. Also the slogan which is featured in both advertisments, we orginally didnt have a slogan and now that there one is does really tie them both together and makes them work as one.

Evaluation - Question 3

What have you learned from your audience feedback
When the project was complete we put it on facebook to see the reactions of the viewers. By putting of facebook we can get a reaction from the people who we know on facebook, therefore who would give their opinion becuase most of the responses are from media students.

Amanda Hillis : music relates well to the topic of documentary. Photos used well with voiceover. Good use of cutaways and interviews. The sped up section worked well and effective
Coral Evan : the interviews are great they dont drag on and the vox pops are really good muic fits well with it to.

Sean : its great very professional! The music works well throughout, as does the bit when the video changes tempo. Maybe makes the voice on the two guys being interviewed a little louder, but other than that, would defo not seem out of place on television.

Also i asked the girl who was in the documentary whipping her hair and who is also the main image of the print ad to fill out the questionnaire, to see what her opinion was when watching and seeing something she was a part of and helped make happen. She filled out the questionnaire which the class did also:

The importance of couducting this audience feedback was to see if that the audience who we asked in our original audience research, like was they see becuase they are the ones who we listened to when we were making the decisionf for our documentary. I also think i was important to ask a girl who was feature in the finished products to comment because she will be honest because if she doesnt like how we have portrayed her she will say so. Overall i believe that the audience research has been very useful to see what other people who havent seen the documentary as much as we have to comment on it and tell us honestly what they think it is like and to tell us were the imperfections lie, so they can be improved in future products.

Evaluation - Question 4

How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?
In the begining stages if making the first 5 minutes of the documentary we had to conduct research to do this we used the internet to use facts and figures on hair, we also found codes and conventions to stick to when planning the documentary also we did a questionnaire for the audience feedback, then we could started the construction.
Constrution of interviews:

Camera
This was the most important technology needed to create the documentary. We need this to film the interviews, opening titles, vox pops and cutaways before we could edit them, without the camera we could have filmed anything for the documentary.

Tripod
When filming the interviews and the opening titles we needed a tripod. This was so that there was no shakey camera movement when filiming. When we were filiming the opeining titles it was every important and useful because we had to make sure the camera stayed in the same place while we added different hair products to spell the word hair.

Stills camera:

While we were doing all of the filming we were asked to take pictures to show that it was us filiming we hadnt simple took a clip of youtube. This is useful because now we have photos to show that we done it.

Microphone:

Along with the camera and the tripod the mircophone was also a very important piece of technology which was needed to make the documentary. Once when we had an interview to so the microphone didnt work and it disrupted all of our work becuase we had to re-film again.

Editing:

Adobe Premier:

When it came to editing the questions and making it to the documentary we had to use adobe premier because it is easy to use and effect to find the exact part that is needed to be edited. I think this was the best technology which we could have used for the editing, i had never used it before and it was really simple to understand. However it did take a while to complete everything.

Radio studio:

After all the editing and we had created slots were a voiceover could be we went to the ice radio studio to record our voiceover. We did this hear rather than on a voice recorder because the quality of the voice clips are more better. The voiceover tied everything together and finished of the documentary. We also used the radio studio for voice over on the radio ad.

Radio Trailer

Adobe Audition

When the script for the radio ad was recorded we created the radio trailer for our documentary, this was done by taking the documentary's sound including the interviews, vox pops and cutaways and then selected which part of the documentary we wanted in the radio ad. It was very easy to use and it was effective in creatin our radio ad.

Print ad:

Photoshop

After designing what we wanted the print ad to look like on paper we took photos to match the drawings, after selecting the perfect picture to convey the message of our documentary, we began the editing process in photoshop adding the letters from real channel 4 ads one by one and also adding the channel 4 sign. In school we have been taught photoshop for a while so the technology wasnt new therefore it was simple to complete this print ad.

Editing Newspaper Advertisments.

I then had to add in the slogan 'what's your style' and then the print ad was complete

The image looked better dark and this was the final outcome.

I then messed around with the brightness of the image.

I then straighten the image so that there was a definate divide if hair and no hair.

To make the channel 4 stand out more i changed the colour to white so that it clear to the audience what channel the documentary is on.

I then added the image to the writing.

I then chose my image.

One the writting was complete I merged all the writting together so that they were easy to move around when the image was add.

To make the written I took the letter from the channel 4 website I copied and pasted each letter to make it look authentic, it took time but it was worth it.

I firstly got the channel 4 image from the internet and put it on a tansparent background and it was easy to editing and change its colour because it is a simple image.

Newspaper Advertisment Production.

When designing the print add wewanted to creat a divide of the girls face and hair. Showing one side is happy with hair and the other isnt without hair, it was difficult to make one side of the girls hair look like it isnt there however the shots which are closer up in editing looked better and more realistic that there is less hair on one side. We tryed her doing different expression, different poses and her doing differen things with her hair extensions, there was a number of good shot which were good but some looked like an advert for make up rather than an advert for a hair documentary. To create the writing on the print add i took different screen grabs of the writing on the channel for website to make the print add look more aurthentic, this was hard work but i think that it has paid and looks like an actual channel 4 advertisment

This the image we chose
